Terrestrial pests on Hawaii

Before booking your stay, we want to make sure that you know a few things about our lovely retreat space. We are an organic retreat center and farm. Centered in a tropical rainforest with many weird and wonderful insect species that look like something straight out of the most far-fetched sci-fi movie! We do not use harsh non-natural pesticides or cleaning chemicals. As a result, we occasionally have more animal visitors. These may include cute geckos, ants, large flying cockroaches, centipedes, cane spiders and mice. We are in their natural habitat. Let the office know if any of these guests are making you uncomfortable, we will have them removed for you. We will not refund your stay for these house guests.

Additionally, we kindly request you to carry your own flash lights in addition to your cell phone torch light to help with navigating through the property pathways at night where light might me minimal.

Room & property damages include, but are not limited to:

    • Excessive Need for Cleaning of an Individual Room (i.e. makeup, face medications including benzoyl peroxide, oil stains, tanning products, excessive trash, unwelcome odors, etc.)

    • Damaged and/or Missing Items within Accommodation
    • Damaged and/or Missing Items within: Retreat Facilities, Venue/Meeting Spaces and Grounds (this includes cabana kitchen, pool/hot tub areas, sauna, farm, gardens and all of Hale Akua landscaping).

  • Power Outages and Solor Powered Battery Backup:

The solar electric system at Hale Akua currently consists of 200 solar panels, 12 inverters and 24 solar batteries. Lori Grace has invested in this system to prevent unnecessary contribution to climate change. This solar electric system will add another two days of electricity, provided there has been an adequate amount of sunlight charge before an electrical outage. We also have 10 Eco-Flow batteries (3kw electricity per room) which can add two to three days of electricity if needed. Learning to live on limited electricity is a wonderful and necessary education for our current climate situation. We would like for all our guests to learn to work together with our staff in these situations.
Large hotels here on Maui that experience an electrical failure do not provide backup power, nor do they offer refunds. As we do not feel responsible for Hawaiian Electric’s failures, there will be an opportunity for education rather than a refund if we have an outage, and our staff will assist you the best they can.
