We went the extra mile when designing and building Hale Akua Garden Farm & Eco-Retreat center to encompass essential components of natural health, a chemical-free environment, mindful living and eco-sustainable living; inclusive of farming practices, waste management, renewable energy and ecological construction. We focus on the basic relationships with our body, land, life forms and natural environment in order to detoxify and rejuvenate our bodies. This helps to enable all guest and visitors at Hale Akua to operate at their highest capacity during their time here. Our aim is to heighten your experience of rejuvenation, personal development, inner and outer health, and your overall enrichment.
As one of the oldest eco-retreats in Maui, we take active steps toward environmental sustainability and social responsibility by Supporting our natural surroundings and the local community. Learn about our ecological environment & sustainable practices below.
Air that is filled with negative air ions and air free from pesticides, herbicides and gasoline fumes found in the tourist areas of Lahaina and Kihei
We seek to be as green as possible and subscribe to the practice, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We recycle everything that we can on the island and also compost all of our food waste. We also use recycled paper products for our toilet paper and paper towels.
You come here to detox, therefore Hale Akua prides ourselves in offering you a chemical free environment. Cleanse and renew in our saltwater pool, chemical free hot tubs and saunas. This allows for your inner and outer health and healing while you are here.
We use as many chemical free products in cleaning our houses as we can. No chlorine or ammonia is used at Hale Akua as a cleaning agent. We are now even using organic cleaning products and laundry soap.
Hale Akua is committed to growing organic and building soil while producing nutrient dense food. Some regenerative and organic practices we use and experiment with are cover cropping, crop rotations, no till gardening, vermicomposting, Black Soldier fly cultivation, syntropic agroforestry, rotational grazing of chickens, mushroom cultivation, and more. We are always happy to talk more and share what we do!
Hale Akua’s solar system currently consists of 200 solar panels, 12 invertors, and 24 solar batteries. Lori Grace has invested in this first and foremost because she does not like contributing to climate change. if the weather has been pretty good before an electrical outage the solar system will add another two days of electricity. We also have 10 Eco-Flow batteries (3 kw electricity per room)which can add two to three days of electricity if the weather has been bad. We will learn to work together on limited electricity. If you were staying in a large hotel here in Maui that had an electrical failure there would be no back up and no refunds. We do not feel responsible for Hawaiian Electric’s failure. Nontheless, learning to live on limited electricity is a wonderful education. There will be an education rather than a refund if we have an outage and our staff will serve you very well.
Hale Akua has set up a 1000 gallon Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to raise fish and prawns in symbiosis alongside leafy greens and herbs in a process known as aquaponics. To be truly sustainable we are working towards creating a locally raised fish feed for our fish. To do so, we raise Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) with food waste collected from retreats, guests, and neighbors and convert it into protein rich larvae and nutrient rich worm castings which are used in our gardens. The larvae along with other protein rich greens such as duckweed and moringa provide the foundation for our fish’s nutritional and protein rich diet.
We run all of our vehicles on biodiesel made by our local Pacific BioDiesel from Maui’s waste restaurant oil. As a result we use very little gasoline of any kind on the property.
Hale Akua is a 501(c)(3) non-profit wellness & education eco-retreat center located in the heart of lush Hawaiian tropical rainforest on Maui’s north shore.
