Vinyasa Yoga with Tanmayo

Tanmayo is Hale Akua’s highly experienced yoga teacher who comes each week to teach yoga to guests, staff and interns who choose to attend. She combines hatha yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, visualization, singing and prayer in her work. A wonderful class to relax in and let go in a beautifully focused way. Tanmayo’s partner, Adrian, frequently accompanies Tanmayo with his beautiful music as she teaches her wonderful class.

Hula Class with Mohala

At Hale Akua, Mohala offers simple hula lessons every Wednesday at 5:30 PM, with additional availability upon request. Her classes are open to everyone—men, women, and children alike. Each session begins with an oli, a Hawaiian chant accompanied by hand gestures, followed by basic footwork and a warm-up with the ipu, a traditional gourd used for percussion. Participants then learn a simple hula accompanied by a Hawaiian mele, allowing them to take home a meaningful danced prayer.

Facilitator: Mohala | Wednesday – 05:30PM

Fishing at Hale Akua Garden Farm

Hale Akua Garden Farm is proud to announce a new AirBnb activity connected with our farm. People who choose this activity will have a chance to go  fishing for Tilapia in one of Hale Akua Garden farms’ ponds together with our staff person, Nicholas,  who can teach the customer how to fish kill the fish humanely and show the person how to prepare the fish for cooking.  These fish have won two blindfolded taste tests over a two-year period, comparing their taste with tilapia fish sold by Costco (the first year) and tilapia fish sold by Whole Foods.

We believe that these fish have won the taste tests because of the superior food we have fed them, duck weed for one, and soldier fly larvae raised at least to some extent on the food waste from our guests.  They can cook them or freeze them after they are killed right away. The catch will be limited to three tilapia .

The most notable part of this activity is the education around them. By  fishing for a fish raised aquaponically, the person is not choosing to eat a fish from an already depleted ocean. Also, this fish is not exposed to any common ocean contaminants like mercury, PCBs, and PFAS. People who choose to participate in this activity will also receive a pamphlet about how commercial fishing and climate change are deeply hurting Maui’s ocean ecology and its iconic animals like dolphins, whales, monk seals, sea birds, coral, and reef fish.

Facilitator: Nicholas | Cost $45 per person or per family, three fish per family.
